Question Ubuntu Server - needing to setup X

I had an install of the ubuntu server but was wanting xcfe4 installed. Well for some reason it keep giving me an error that X was not able to start.

Is there something out there that can aid in an Ubuntu server setup? Cups, Samba, NFS...

Neeing to have a gui, but only when I start it... which would not be often.

Suggestions?

Did you install X to begin with? If so, sudo apt-get install xfce4 of course, make sure your /etc/apt/sources.list contains the universe and multiverse repositories.

If not try sudo apt-get install x-window-system-core and then install xfce4.

Once installed, just type startx...

You can try sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg.

Also, were you root? I'm not sure if x will run as root...

I got it up and going. Installed X, configured it, installed IceMW.. changed mind about xfce4, and now trying to install printers and configure Samba to work right.

Thanks,

Ok, I have tried everything I know. I cannot get the printer to work.
It is a Canon iP3000. I can make the BJC-7100 drivers work. However, I cannot get the blasted thing configured right. I followed the cups command for adding a printer.. works but it is trying to pull from the top try...

Tried installing foomatic-gui and startx. Well, foomatic will not start.
Error -
root@server1:/# foomatic-gui
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/foomatic-gui", line 77, in ?
import gtkhtml2
ImportError: No module named gtkhtml2

I have installed every gtkhtml lib there is... what is the deal. I wish Ubuntu would get with Libranet and combine forces.
