Question ubuntu really slow after installation

I recently installed ubuntu linux(hardy heron , 8.04) ,along with winXp to make a dual boot system, the installation went on smoothly but after
installation i found that ,ubuntu is really slow . it takes a long time to respond
to miouse clicks, graphical menus are really slow.

what could be the reason for this ?
is there any solution for this ?

I had given swap space equal to double the RAM size

What are the specs on your computer? Are you sure it's Ubuntu's fault and not just an aging system?

probably has more to do with video drivers if even the mouse is slow to move around , are you dealing with an onboard card ? specs would certainly help

Post the output of

#lshw

(edit it to remove unnecessary details)

or just provide info about :

CPU,Mainboard, RAM, size of root partition, Swap, Graphics card

If you have limited system resources then you must also adjust services

#sudo serviceconfig

I had the same problem with Ubuntu, my system was sluggish but it's an old computer. I am running Xubuntu now and it's hunky dory.

I noticed you said that Ubuntu ran slowly after installation though, does that mean that it didn't when you ran the live CD? Just curious.

it is a core to duo machine, with on board sound, graphics, intel 965
G chipset syatem
it is an assembled machine (I don't know the motherboard make)

but the main fact is , earlier ubuntu 7.04 was running smoothly on
that machine

You have misunderstood the question: When the system boots, there will be, of necessity, disk accesses (unless you are booting from a non-disk device).

When you get into the GUI, there may be disk accesses for a short while (& Gnome is 'better' than KDE at giving you the impression early that the computer is up and running while still doing internal housekeeping).

But there are various processes that may still be running indexing the disk (updatedb, beagle, kerry beagle, strigi and some more). If one or more of those are still running, the system will run slow, because of the disk acesses. So, I will repeat my question "Have disk drive accesses stopped?".

Is it an older system with an IDE hard drive? If so check if DMA is enabled
Code:
sudo hdparm /dev/hda
See this thread from the Ubuntu forums to learn about DMA and how to enable it:

This suggests an underlying hardware problem..
