Ubuntu on external hard disk

i have a pendrive which was formatted too many times, so it has become an external hard disk, or at least it apppears so on all os's. i was wondering if anyone knew how to get a working ubuntu version on an external hard drive, one which also saves the changes, not like a live cd, but like slax. I heard about persistent installs but i'm not sure how they work. thanks for any help. keep in mind i have limited space: 2gb. i want this ubuntu to work on any pc, like a live cd. preferably i would like to get itunes on it, not a clone.
