I'd say the main benefit with Ubuntu "flavors" versus Debian is that they are updated every six months.... Debian's stack is basically frozen in mid-2014. Perhaps I'd choose it in some cases over Ubuntu LTS, especially on my 1999 PowerBook G3.
That's why there's backports. Libreoffice 5.1.1.3, chromium 49, etc. Newer, more up to date software on the stable Debian base.
I've never found a reason to switch to Ubuntu. IMO, Debian proper is just more pleasant to deal with.

While some things like that are updated in Debian, I like to play with quasi-recent kernels and desktop environments that are well integrated into the system. I'll admit I'm impatient, which is probably why I use Tumbleweed most of the time.
