ubuntu freezes after login entered

Hello
I am new to this site and am not familiar with most code language so being descriptive would really help me out. I dual boot windows and Ubuntu for various reasons and whenever I login to Ubuntu the standard login screen comes up. I input my password and it completely freezes. All I managed to do is go to some random terminal thing by hitting ctrl alt f2 or f1. It said I needed to run sudo apt-get upgrade and that I did not have enough memory to upgrade. Could this be why it does not login? Lack of memory and space? Please help.

I dunno if this helps but I have a dell inspiron PC with i3 processors and Intel graphics.

thx
Rob

Hopefully you have a) cleaned up your MS Windows. By that I mean: deleted many unimportant large files,
b)then optimized your hard drive (such as "uslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/") before attempting to create a dual boot scenario

By the way how much RAM does this PC have?

On my old dell towers,
I could never successfully dual boot Windows Vista with anything else.
Thus it would be helpful to tell us what version of Windows you have.
I found XP was quite comfortable with dual boot scenario, and Win 2000 also.

Ubuntu 12 was installable for me. However since all my towers are older, Ubuntu 13 led to various bad installs with lots of failure errors.

Note:
I am assuming that the Ubuntu never allowed you to log in and thus has no important data from you.
IF this is true you could go into Windows and delete the failed install of Ubuntu.
c) Depending on what version of Windows you could use the 'Computer Management' snap in to delete the failed install.
Keep us posted.....

I used to be able to dual boot but now it just randomly stopped. I have not downloaded anything huge and I used to have space

hard to say and maybe unlikely, but this would be the first thing to check, no?
so, how much ram do you have? and disk space?
are you sure you are actually dual booting? how exactly did you install ubuntu?
