Ubuntu fails on dual-boot installation: only sees usb

Hello,

I just got new Dell from work running Windows 10. I really need Ubuntu in a dual-boot for a lot of simulations that run only on Linux, and I want to avoid virtual machines.

So I resized the Windows partition and tried installing Ubuntu with a usb stick. But in the beginning of the installation Ubuntu tells me that there is no space for the installation. It only sees the usb stick, with 8.1GB. In other words, it doesn't detect the hdd.

Has someone experienced that already? Any help?

I really appreciate

Best Regards.

If this is a 'work' computer, meaning owned by your employer, have you received permission to do this? If not, wouldn't it be simpler to just install Ubuntu on a flash drive and being it with you?

Windows 10, pre-installed? If so, it is UEFI and Ubuntu must be UEFI. See the link below.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI

Is windows 10 hibernated? You would need that off as well as fast boot and anything related or the partitions won't be mounted or shown.
Does running fdisk display the partitions?
Which option are you selecting for the Installation Type? You should use the manual "Something Else" option.

In addition to all of yancek's comments, you have to make sure your installation USB (or DVD) is booted in UEFI mode.

Thanks for the replys

Yes, of course I've received permission. The computer was acquired for Geant4 simulations on Ubuntu. Those can require lots of power form the processor, and it wouldn't be a good idea to use the OS on a flash drive or VM.

I'll follow the steps you suggested me and will come back when its done.

Thanks a lot.
