Has anybody had any problems with Ubuntu edgy and atheros wireless cards?
On this laptop(an acer 5050, turion X2, Ati Xpress200 etc...) the module ath_pci loads, the wireless card (an atheros AR5005G, using the 2413 chipset) is detected, and my wifi router is detected (no WPA or WEP enabled) but when I try and go connect to the router, it fails....

wireless lan manager (kde) shows the detected AP, but fails to connect, as does network setting is the control center...
thinking that possibly it might be a problem with this particular chipset...I tried a PCMCIA atheros card that I know works with linux (it has a 5121 chipset).however... that gave me the same error....
BTW, the output of wlanconfig ath0 list ap is:
hmmm... seems I don't have wlanconfig... could that be a problem?
thanks for the help, tell me if you need the output of any other programs....
I tried installing the newest Madwifi drivers(svn) no difference except now I have wlanconfig
seems I have a problem with broadcasting though... I can sense all things about my wireless router(signal stregnth, etc) but I CANNOT connect to it...
This card was working in Ubuntu Dapper(live CD) but did not in suse 10.1...
no.. its definately not a problem with the network manager... ifup doesn't even work....
I believe its probably a problem with the newest atheros driver and my card...
I got it working using Ndis wrapper. It was working great... then all of a sudden it switched from operating in 802.11g to 802.11b.....
I know there is a way to swich between modes... I jst don't remember how...
the output to iwconfig:
ath0 IEEE 802.11b ESSIDff/any
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
Bit Rate=54 Mb/s
Power Managementff
Link Quality:100/100 Signal level:-94 dBm Noise level:-256 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
kwireless assistant cannot detect a wireless network...
I can't think of any packages that I installed that could have messed it up...
something else that is very odd is that it detects the signal stregnth on a scale of 100 as opposed to the scale of 94 which was being used while it was working...
does this have to do with the fact that its in '"b" mode?

Hi. Yes, same card and same problem with Edgy. Solved it so far by using madwifi-old:
1. install the sharutils and the build-essential packages
2. uninstall the restricted-modules package
3. Get old madwifi http://snapshots.madwifi.org/madwifi-old-current.tar.gz
4. untar, make, sudo make install
5. Check to make sure old modules are not loaded and remove if they are.
6. sudo modprobe ath_pci
7. sudo dhclient ath0
I have a Toshiba A135-s2276 with and Atheros5006EG I'm running Ubuntu Edgy 2.6.17-10 generic with the the right restricted packages for the mad wifi drivers, I have RTFM'd I have googled for two days, I had it working yesterday for about 15 minutes but on reboot it ceased working, I got it working the first time by doing wlanconfig ath0 which I found here, Iwconfig shows no wireless devices. My wired stop working also but a reboot resolved that. This may help also:
computer@:~$ modprobe ath_pci
WARNING: Error inserting ath_rate_sample (/lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/madwifi/ath_rate_sample.ko): Operation not permitted
FATAL: Error inserting ath_pci (/lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/madwifi/ath_pci.ko): Operation not permitted
computer@:~$ wlanconfig ath create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode sta
wlanconfig: ioctl: No such device
I have tried multiple madwifi drivers but nothing seems to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am very new to linux so any suggestions would be appreciated.
Don't mean to bump so soon but every forum that I have read some people think their cards are working but they never come back to say if or if not the drivers worked. I don't want to use ndiswrapper and I don't know when mad wifi is gonna release they new package to fix ther atheros EG card problem. If anyone has a real solution and a guide to doing it. I have tried using the repositories and using the the newest images of the driver nothing works. Thanks alot guys.
This 5006EG looks like it may not yet be supported. This ticket is from August; so I don't know. I'm trying to get to madwifi.org, but am not getting through at the moment.
Distribution: K/Ubuntu 18.04-14.04, Scientific Linux 6.3-6.4, Android-x86, Pretty much all distros at one point...

A note for those unfamiliar with Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu... you may easily add repositories that include the MadWifi packages... and additional gui tools to make it and wpa_supplicant available to those who wish to support wireless on a K/X/Ubuntu laptop. Just do a search.
Automatix is always an alternative as well,... do a search for it on Google.
