ubuntu dvd playing

i have 4 dvd players installed,,,mplayer plays almost perfect,,but not there yet...the other players are sort of choppy,,,what i mean ,,not smooth...plays a bit,,sort of hesistates, and smooth again ,,hesistates,.....what is my problem.. i have downloaded a ton of files...its almost like a hardware acceleration thing...running on a socket 754 with pcie x1800gto.

try typing $hdparm /dev/cdrom
in a terminal window... it will tell you whether DMA is turned on for this device.
if it is not try $sudo hdparm -d 1 /dev/cdrom
