Closed. In future it would be beneficial, and in keeping with the community spirit on LQ, if you post the answer as a reply to your own question rather than delete the post.

The answer is that Ubuntu does not use the root account. It uses SUDO access. To run a command with root privileges, you open a terminal and type sudo <commandname> and then when it prompts you for a password, you input your own password.
