I have to confess i've had this problem since i installed Ubuntu 8.10 yesterday. I have to confess that I installed and am running it in a virtual environment (using parallels desktop). I assumed parallels was playing up, but as it's a known issue with ubuntu 8.10 i will give the fixes above a go and report back

Btw, first post on these forums for a fair while... it's good to be back

Adding acpi=force to the kernel boot parms in /boot/grub/menu.lst fixed this issue for me. My BIOS was 4/22/1999. When I booted the system there was an error message that said 2000 was the cutoff date for requiring the acpi=force option.
