ubuntu doesn't like amd athlon 1.40GHz

i have ubuntu 9.04 and i have ran it on many computer system here at my school
we have mostly dell optimas
old ones have an intel pentium p4
the fairly new ones have an intel pentium 4
the brand new ones have an intel duo core (of course ii will work on this one)

but for some reason it won't work on my computer which has an AMD Athlon 1.40GHz and it won't work
the screen with the options comes up, then the splash screen comes up then the screen goes black and nothing happens for hours

Did you check you're install media on the computer on which you're going to install ?
Did you try to install it the text mode ?
What are the specs of you're graphic card and monitor ?
