Ubuntu dial-up share (with twist)
 

Hi there folks.

I've just installed Ubuntu 6.10 on my desktop (a Dell 3100c... it's a bit "last year"). Everything went absolutely flawlessly and I was impressed to be able to see my WinXP partition from within Ubuntu (yes, I'm new to this.... my last non-Win OS was Warp 2.0, which ended badly).

I have one remaining problem, which stems from the lack of ADSL infrastructure where I live (in the country in Vendée in France).

We don't have ADSL, so I have a unidirectional satellite for download and dial-up for the upload leg. Problem is that our dial-up provider (France Telecom/Orange) requires that our onnection be made through a piece of software which generates conflicts with the satellite dish software.

So. We connect a notebook (a Dell Inspiron 9400) through dialup and then the desktop shares that connection via Windows internet connection sharing. The notebook links to a Netgear DG834G router via Wifi and the desktop links to the same router via ethernet.

After I installed Ubuntu on the desktop, I dithered around trying to get the desktop to see the Windows network (i.e., to see the notebook) but to no avail. I have dwnloaded a bunch of stuff dealing with dial-up under Ubuntu, but I don;'t think it will solve the issue of sharing the connection (and I still need a way to get the satellite software - Windows only - to run under Ubuntu).

Sorry for the book-length post, but I've tried to provide comprehensive background to the question - which is... how do you share a dial-up connection (on a indows PC) with an Ubuntu PC?

Also, I have not been able to instal Ubuntu on the notbook either - I get a video driver error just after the livedisc tries to load. Any guidance on where that error comes from?

To clarify the video error when trying to instal Ubuntu on the notebook... the livedisk goes through its opening sequence as normal (up to the list of options at startup), then after it tries to load, it dies with a blue screen and a message -

Failed to start the XServer

It then asks is I want to look at the log file'the log file's main lines of interest say...

I810(0) No video BIOS mode for chosen depth
screens found, but nonee oof them has a usable configuration

The notebook in question is a Dell Inspiron 9400. The error happens if I try the safe boot selection from the boot list, oo.

Perhaps the 17" screen is causing the problem, but it runs fine under WinXP (SP2).

Has anyone seen this before with a notebook? I've Googled the problem but have not found anyting useful.

Update -file sharing (LAN) and internet connection sharing now working perfectly. Citrix ICA client now working perfectly. Notebook video problem is today's chore, along with trying to get
* TradeStation (futures trading platform)
* kyDSL (satellite internet driver software) and
* Orange Internet Manager (ISP malware that rivals AOL for pure evil)
to run under WINE (no Linux variants that I know of for any of the three).

Over the past 18 years I have installed many many OSs (all except 1 was Microsoft) - from MS-DOS 3.3 throught to Windows XP SP2, and the hell-on-earth that was OS/2 Warp. This is the first OS install that has not driven me to a state of homicidal fury. and it's nto because I'm becoming mellow in my old age...

A great fix for running windows software undre any version of linux is Codeweavers cross over.

As far as the boot up probablemyou mention with yhr note book you should hit the f1 jey at boot for the help menue
