Ubuntu crashes while using Firefox
 

Is it just me, or does Ubuntu crash sometimes when you're using Firefox? I've had a lot of problems with Ubuntu - most were newbie probmles, but this crashing has really gotten to me. I can't find a reason why it's happening to me. Does this happen to anyone - can anyone give me an answer as to why this is happening at least? I'm starting to think it's just Ubuntu.

What do you mean by 'crashes'? What error messages do you get? Does the system lock up and become un-responsive? Have you tried another web browser? I'm running Xubuntu 6.06
on my laptop without any problems. I'm sure ubuntu is not broken, although you may have a problem with your installation.

Are other browsers working OK? Konq, Opera?

Try Opera if you just need another browser..

As for why its doing that, I really don't know. What version of Firefox? Some folks have had problems with 2.0, but I have not. You could try uninstalling Firefox, then reinstall using Synaptic, but this would likely install 1.5

Very rarely (but it does happen), when I have T-bird and FF both running in separate workspaces, and if I click on a link in an email message, my system will seize up entirely. I have to cold restart to bring it back up. Fortunately, this has only happened to me 2 or 3 time in the past couple months, so I haven't really pursued the causes. I've just been assuming it was an FF/TB problem, not Ubuntu. Note: I use this same FF/TB set up in all my distros. Ubuntu is the only place I've seen this happen. You're not alone, but I can't offer any advice on why this happens or how to fix it at this time.

That's basically what happens to me, but I don't have Thunder Bird - I just have a few windows open with a few tabs in each.


EDIT: Except mine problem happens frequently.

Your best bet, uninstall and reinstall FF.

If that doesn't work, do a clean install of Ubuntu.

I've used Kubuntu (dapper,edgy) and Ubuntu (hoary to edgy) and have never had this problem.

How 'bout no. I just did a clean install 3 or more days ago. I just think it's Ubuntu's crappiness that's not allowing me to browse more than 1 page at a time.

EDIT: What do you have to say about THAT? Huh?

I do have to ask why you responded so harshly to Incomingfire's response. He seemed to be just offering some decent and basic advice. He had no reason to know that you had such a fresh install.

Does it happen when you visit a particular site or is it just random? Do you have flash installed and if so what version? I'm using Kubuntu 6.06 with FF 2.0 and flash 9 and have not had this problem or any other crashing problems to date. If your whole system freezes up randomly while browsing the web with firefox then you might try just leaving your system on with out loading up firefox and see if your system still freezes, because computers from time to time can have overheating issues, and bad parts, or it could be a driver problem. If alot of people could not browse the web with a popular web browser I'm sure there would be a lot more people reporting it and the problem would be handled. Since I don't think that is the case, is it possibly bad hardware?

Try to run it from the command line, you may have more information

Someone really needs to take a Paxil.

Suggesting a clean install is a good idea, considering you never mentioned wether you were using a Clean install or an upgrade...

Thanks for the help, homeslices, but I gotten rid of Ubuntu since my first post - I've actually gotten rid of Linux entirely. Which brings me to my next problem!! If you care to help me solve my problem, visit the Gentoo forum.

P.S. I'm actually installing Windows XP on an old machine that was running Ubuntu as I type this message. lol

EDIT: What!? There is no Gentoo forum!? What the dickens!?

I guess I'll ask the question in this thread then since it's so alive and well. I get an install error when ever I try installing Gentoo - error 28 I believe. Anyone know what's up?

I have a similar issue w/ Firefox (1.5.0.8) hanging, but unlike *some*, I won't be giving up my Kubuntu 6.06 anytime soon.

Top says firefox-bin is (intermittently) eating between 0 and 60% of my CPU, with occasional gusts up to 89%. Sometimes it blanks out & comes back, sometimes it crashes, sometimes it hangs & I have to hard restart.

I've read gw90se's link to the Ubuntu forum, but it didn't seem to apply.

Any hints?

Compaq Presario M2000, 1.5GHz Celeron, 51Mb RAM
Typ. Usage: 1-2 OO docs, 1 FFox w/ 1-3 tabs, 1 Konsole

All these problems with Firefox really surprise me, as its always worked to perfection for me. Like I said in my above post, if you want to try Opera, its a very good browser also.. You should be able to install it from the Repos, if not, its easy to install with the instructions on Opera's website.

Ubuntu craches( solution of it)
 

Sir Loin is true that Ubuntu craches when using firefox.Its not a problem with installation .Basically its creates a hidden file which is "parentlock" ,due to which it craches.
The sol is to remove that file ,which is as under

# rm .mozilla/firefox/hl4pd9mq.default/.parentlock
Here "hl4pd9mq.default" is the "path" which is in ".mozilla/firefox/profile .ini".

The second sol is to update the Ubuntu .

And also the fat serer is not updated at all..it would stop happening by updated the fat server.
