Ubuntu corrupts redhat enterprise linux

Hi, I have a 80 GB IDE hard disk, which is currently formatted in the following way : 100 mb boot as primary, 2 Gb swap, 10 Gb /. i wanted to see what is Ubuntu all about, hence i created a 4th partition of 10 Gb to install ubuntu. Ubuntu installs fine, but when it comes to install a boot loader , i opt for not installing it since i want to keep the grub boot loader which is provided by Redhat. i have tried to edit the grub.conf to add the ubuntu entry and to show which partition to boot from for ubuntu, but it doesnt help as when i select ubuntu from the grub menu it says file not found, error 15. also redhat is corrupted. Redhat works fine if i delete ubuntu partition. Is it absolutely to install the boot loader provided by ubuntu? will it have an entry to boot Redhat ? how can i edit the present grub file to include ubuntu ?

thanks

Post your grub config. because there might be something that was overlooked.

i went ahead and installed the boot loader provided by ubuntu. it loaded fine, also recognised redhat enterprise. but now neither of the os is able to start up the gnome environment. In Ubuntu, after entering the login info there is a blank page - i waited for around 4 hours - nothing happened. In redhat it said cannot touch some files as read only files during boot up and then said it cannot load gdm. the terminals are working fine, and i cant start the x window system form there too. pls help

I would use any linux cd, just to boot the system.
1 - go to a shell Alt-FXXX where FXXX is F3, F4, or something else.
2 - Press enter to activate the console
3 - mount the linux partition which contains the grub configuration. (The partition containing grub.conf or menu.lst in the boot directory or the boot partition.
4 - Mount the partition and edit the grub configuration file to suits your needs
5 - Reboot et voila!
