Ubuntu can't use multiple drives????

http://blogs.zdnet.com/open-source/?p=5145&tag=nl.e589

Quote from the article:
Quote:
Reviews on the desktop version are negative, due to the fact you can’t run multiple drives with the current code base. This means a netbook user may be happy but a desktop user (my desktop has three hard drives) will not be satisfied at all.
If this is true, then Ubuntu / Canonical have just done something really stupid.....

This is the direct quote.

This is a pre-release, not the final version. Any review at this point should be taken with a grain of salt.

Any linux distro will support many drives at once. There could well be a problem in the release candidate, I'm sure it will be fixed by final release.

Some of the people writing this stuff have nothing better to do than start flame wars. Wait for the final release, and then look at the reviews.

The bug is marked as fixed now: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ty/+bug/459054
Looks like it was pretty nasty, though. Especially bad since
1) Ubuntu is a 'newbie friendly' distro
2) 9.10 got reviewed with this fairly major bug in place

Well - 10 points for fast fix (3 days), negative 5 million for poor regression testing

Ummm---OK, but the "executive summary" makes no mention of this being pre-release.

What's more relevant I think is: How would such a fundamental issue ever get INTO a pre-release version?

This is especially true with Phoronix, who just love to compare RC/Beta systems against full releases.

That has more to do with poor reporting than anything - and there is now this notice on that blog:

"Correction The original story incorrectly identified reviews for the release candidate of Ubuntu 9.10 as being for the final version of Ubuntu 9.10."

Blogs are NOT authoritative news sources. They must always be taken with a grain of salt. Especially when they just link to an article on another site.

I agree with your second point, though. It's a pretty big bug. Not unheard of, but still fairly major.
