Question ubuntu can't detect optical mouse

During the setup of ubuntu 5.04 it entered into a never ending cycle where it tried to start X and fails with a msg log saying mouse not found at /dev/input/mice. after a while unbuntu automatically tries again..... and this goes on endlessly.....

I used a second terminal to switch to runlevel 1. And tried to see if anything was wrong with the xorg.conf file. But I didn't notice anything fishy. Since in Slackware mouse is generally at /dev/mouse I did wonder why in ubuntu its under /dev/input/mice...... I also used a copy of my slackware xorg file with necessary modifications......

everytime I switch back to run level 3 ubuntu resumes that vicious cycle and so far no amout of changes I've tried have worked.

Can somebody tell me what's going on here and how does ubuntu configure the mouse.....

BTW, I have a simple logitech optical wheel mouse and I have tried with both PS2 and ImPS2 drivers.

Thanks

Code:
ls -l /dev/input
ls -l /dev/psaux
ls -l /dev/mouse
See if you can find the mouse device

Optical Mouse

Interestingly enough, Ubuntu (Hoary 5.04) installed cleanly on my system, using an old trash mouse.
I've had it up a couple of weeks. Works fine.
I bought a GE Optical mouse with a scroll wheel.

Ubuntu doesn't find it. The old mouse still works.
Has anyone here found a solution to this problem?
I've found references to the problem but no solution.

Do both mice use the same interface? Same number of buttons?

No, the GE Optical is a 3 button (and programmable to boot), but Win2k apparently recognises it ok. (I haven't tried to do any programming of the middle btn, just plugged it in.)
I suppose thats because the Win2K driver is general purpose.
They are both PS2 mice.
Interestingly, it came with no SW disk. :-(

Roy.

The IMPS/2 driver should work for all these mice.

with the new mouse attached to the system try in a terminal

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

see if that reconfigures the mouse settings
