Ubuntu and Printing

Network printing question:

1) Is there a way to admin CUPS within Ubuntu since localhost doesn't except root passwords (even when a sudo root password has been set)? Ubuntu directs you to establish printers through the System/Administration menu, but the functionality here is not comparable (unless I'm missing something).

A clever idea, but the system denies a user named root.

Unfortunately I had tried this already. No luck. Even with a root user and password, the CUPS dialogue will not accept it.

I noticed this too about CUPS in ubuntu. I can't modify or configure the printer with any combination of userid or password.
But, the System/Administration/Printing setup seems to give me all the functionality I need. Do you need some special functionality that CUPS provides?

Try `sudo adduser cupsys shadow`and then `sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart`.

I've tried this, but no dice. I am able to access the cups page, but am unable to login using username "root" and the password I set using lppasswd (which is also my normal root password). I am presented with a fresh login window until I click cancel and am then instructed to go through Gnome. Is it really possible to not have to use Gnome with Ubuntu?

I am presently using xfce, but am unable to use the cups page due to the login failure as described above. I have seen posts stating that it is simply not possible to use cups without Gnome, but zeos in this thread suggests it is possible using lppasswd. However, this has not worked for me. Can anyone shed some light on this?

try to specify the group as well ...

so ... lppasswd -g sys -a root (or try lpadmin as a group) ....I'll do a little poking around about your specific distro to see if I can find anything else for ya...

Not sure how the default cups setup on your distro works exactly, so bear with me

Thanks for the advice, but it still is not working. And I restarted cups afterwards. When I tried toying with lpadmin, I was told I needed to specify a printer name first, but of course no printer is set up yet.

Same problem...

I am having the same problem. This is a known issue and have seen it posted on several forums.
At the top of the cups page it states...
"Administrative tasks have been disabled for security reasons. Please use Menu System > Administration > Printing."
Yea, there is the other way but it stinks, not as fast or efficient. I have used method and like it better. I want to turn it off...

Any ideas anyone?
I have commented out the two sections in my cups.conf... does not help.

cupsd.conf file

I went to the Ubuntu web site and they have no documentation yet to say how they have altered CUPS. What does your cupsd.conf file look like?

I know with SuSe it was as simple as this:
