How do i install Lotus Symphony on ubuntu? How do I get it to show up on the menu under Office like Openoffice is? I like there design and just want to give it a try on my Ubuntu.
You're going to have to be more specific, what file type is it, where did you download it, etc. Are you downloading the Linux version, or are you downloading the Windows version in hopes of running it with Wine.
If its a tar.gz or tar.bz file, which I suspect it is, double click it and extract the files to your desktop. Once its done extracting, open the folder created and look for a "Read Me" or "Install" text file. That should tell you how to compile the source code.
There's also instructions on their site on how to install it.
Compiling can be extremely frustrating because of dependency issues. Its really not for newbies.
It's not available in DEB and is in BIN form. Once installed it places it's self in the GNOME menu but then will not run. Put it in the command prompt and there is a non root conflict so I uninstalled it.
caa1980, the file in question is a bin. You will find the instructioins on their site. Just bear in mind that this is still a beta version and it appears to have some issues with adding itself to your menu; if you know how to edit such issues away, you should be fine. By the way, visit distrowatch.com, there was a review with some tips in the Rootly section that is on the left side. Oh, and don't forget you need at least 400MB of free space and - if I remember well - 1GB of RAM.
Edit: OK, you found out yourself while I was typing this up. Do have a look at the article I mentioned, it explains how to start it from the command line.
I'll stick with OpenOffice.org then it dosen't require 1GB of ram and it dose what I like. I Just likes the look of the Lotus Syphony, Plus I don't have 1gb of ram I only have 512mb.
