Ubuntu and Compaq Presario 1200

Helpfull hint....I have a Compaq Presario 1200 laptop, which I cleaned of all M$ O/s, data, etc (Format C: and Format D:). I set the BIOS to CD-ROM start. Ubuntu 6.10 wouldn't boot, nor would Fedora Core 6 or Mandriva 2007.

I reinstalled the Compaq Quickrestore, and Ubuntu 6.10, Mandriva Linex 2007 and Fedora Core 6 still wouldn't boot - the laptop wouldn't recognise any of the CDs. However any M$ formatted disk would run 100% O/K.

I finally found a 2005 version of Ubuntu, and it booted perfectly.;). I now have to upgrade Ubuntu to 6.10.

I now have to erase all the hidden M$ crap which is still residing in the laptop, and upgrade the base memory.

Total elapsed time to get Ubuntu up and running - aprox 42 hours. DO NOT ASK ME WHAT I THINK OF M$!!

Regards,

Ingeer.

A question: Where did you get the cds from? If you downloaded and burned them yourself, maybe you didn't burn them as iso images, but rather a normal data cds. This is a very common mistake that many users are making.

Rgds.

Ubuntu and Compaq

G'Day,
All CDs were from monthly magazines, purchased over the counter at local newsagents.

Nowehere in the magazines were there instructions to download the CDs onto blank CDs. As an ex M$ person I just assumed that the CDs would run, the same way that M$ runs CDs.

Another question/comment - I cannot get my laptop to cold boot from the CD drive (nor A: drive), even though the BIOS is set for these two drives to start the laptop. Likewise, I can't get Ubuntu to recognise A: or C: drives (I want to load some more software).

Regards,

Ingeer.
