I had just installed the latest development updates on my Ubuntu 9.04 laptop, and a very strange problem appeared. Other than the fact that the automatically generated initrd does not work, whenever I try to log on using gdm, it will seem like its logging in, and then go to a black screen with randomly vertical colored lines streaking a part of the screen. It then returns back to the login screen. This happens regardless of whether I am logging into GNOME, KDE, etc. Furthermore, if I try switching to tty1 and logging in from command line, the screen will just freeze and fixate on those same vertical lines until I switch back to the login screen.
Furthermore, if I shutdown, the standard shutdown messages (* Shutting down this daemon: [OK]) are loaded onto the screen in pairs, one set on the left side of the screen, and one side on the right. I will try and get pictures if possible, but direct screenshots are out of the question, as I cannot even log on.
OK, even more trouble. Now gdm is failing to load one of its shared libraries (libglib-2.0.so.0), and though I can now log on from the shell, none of the display managers will start up. Even if I just run startx, it comes up with an error that the tiling on the different buffers are being rejected by the kernel.
I have the same problem. It keeps logon and re-logon. There is nothing I can do to bypass it. With any session, even failsafe terminal it won't finish logon.
I have upgraded to 9.04. I'm using Macbook pro 3.1 with parallel virtual machine.
