Talking Ubuntu 9.10 USB Start-up Disk Creator breaks flash drive

Since updating the Beta and later a clean install of Karmic 9.10, using the USB Startup Creator has caused trouble. I now have 3 unmountable (system doesn't see them) and 1 read-only flash drives. I'm afraid to try any more in case I permanently destroy them too. The permissions of the read-only one are for something unknown and even as root I am blocked.

I see others are having somewhat similar problems.

EDIT:
Solved my own problem. I used gparted to delete and reformat drives. They were formatted as 'boot' and apparently this makes them unreadable. Sorry you wasted time reading this!

You can have bootable usb drives with free space for writing. You can mount bootable usb drives too.
