Ubuntu 9-10 locks up

Sometimes I can click to close a program to close it and it will lock. No matter what I do; (click on EDIT OR FILE, etc, the system will lock. This happens several times each day. I shut down using ALT + SYSRQ + R, S, E, I, U, then B for a soft shutdown.
I have used Ubuntu before, but this is a fresh install after having problems with the computer. Computer is a Dell 2400.

Ubuntu 9.10 is almost EOL, having support ending in April 2011. Your best bet is to install a newer release, like the latest stable (10.10) or latest LTS (10.04). 9.10 has had plenty of problems from what I've experienced, so it makes sense to get a newer release, even if it means sacrificing stability.

Thanks. Would it be better to use upgrade manager to upgrade to 10-10 or use the Ubuntu daily build link in your answer? I just hate have to do a new install.
