ubuntu 9.10 defaults to black screen and prompt. no gtk window. python prob?

Hi. Installed 9.10 on a newer intel imac in a partition. Just get the prompt--no nice gui. I went back and installed startupmanager again and saw the window was failing to form. Is this a python issue?

-- I am loading with lilo 22.8
-- I get "unable to access" devices/pci000:00/0000:00:06.0/usb4/4-4 and
-- I get "unable to access" devices/pci000:00/0000:00:04.1/usb1/1-3/1-3.2
-- And when setting preimilary keymap, [5.944012] b43-phy0 Error: found unsupported phy (analog 8, type 4, revision 4)

It would be nice to at least get to the standard ubuntu gui and then solve other issues from there. Any ideas? Nellis

how fixed

Somehow I figured out I needed to

sudo apt-get install xorg gdm gnome-core
sudo apt-get install gtk2-engines human-theme
sudo apt-get install firefox

Here I am now online via ubuntu.
