Ubuntu 8X and extras
Where can one find additional packages for ubuntu that are not listed in the add/remove software of the install. There are so many apps that I do not see that I need. When using mandriva, you can always go to the website and find just about any package that you need with an explanation of what it is and does and the category. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Are you sure that your repositories are properly configured? I have about 24500 packages available... (I had to add medibuntu manually, the rest was set up by default).
Also, each package provides information in the box at the bottom when it is selected. Of course, you can also go here:

To see all packages System-> Administration-> Synaptics Package Manager-> Settings drop down-> Repositories. Insure that (universe), (restricted), and (multiverse) are checked. Close the window and you're back in Synaptic where you'll see all available packages. I'd recommend you check out medibuntu.org and follow the the instructions in "Repository Howto". This will give you access to packages like Google Earth and DVDCSS from the Synaptics package.
