Ubuntu 7.10 -> 8.04 migrated, SiS671 driver no longer working

I've just migrated to 8.04 from 7.10, which I had configured with a driver for my Esprimo laptop (Sis671). Unfortunately, I can't get this driver to work any more, and I'm stuck with Vesa 800x600.

Any suggestions? Here's the xorg.conf that I'm trying to use:

Are you sure that it is using VESA? Your xorg.conf shows it should be using SIS. Try sludo lsmod | grep sis.
Anyway, here are a couple of things that may be relevant:

Quote:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
Option "DPMS"
HorizSync 28-64
VertRefresh 43-60
EndSection
You may need to adjust the vertical and horizontal refresh rates. Setting them too low may result in low maximum resolution. Setting them too high, however, will probably end in a blank screen so you should try and find the exact refresh rates for your monitor (manual, google, ...).

Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Standardgrafikkarte"
Monitor "Standardbildschirm"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Modes "800x600"
This one says 800x600 so it obviously isn't going to get any higher. You may want to add something higher - although success may depend on adjusting the refresh rates first.

Hi Jay
thanks for the reply, I've changed the default resolutions like you suggested. It turns out the real problem is that the SiS video driver needs to be recompiled for 8.04 - there's a thread here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...t=M671&page=12,
and luckily a couple of guys on that forum have done all the work - I D/Ld the drivers and it all works! I'm now running Hi-Res again.
BTW reading that thread doesn't put SiS and their (lack of) Linux support in a very good light.
