Ubuntu 7.10 -> 8.04 migrated, SiS671 driver no longer working
I've just migrated to 8.04 from 7.10, which I had configured with a driver for my Esprimo laptop (Sis671). Unfortunately, I can't get this driver to work any more, and I'm stuck with Vesa 800x600.
Any suggestions? Here's the xorg.conf that I'm trying to use: # xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file) # # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using # values from the debconf database. # # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page. # (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.) # # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only* # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg # package. # # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated # again, run the following command: # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg Section "Files" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Generic Keyboard" Driver "kbd" Option "CoreKeyboard" Option "XkbRules" "xorg" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbLayout" "de" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Configured Mouse" Driver "mouse" Option "CorePointer" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad" Driver "synaptics" Option "SendCoreEvents" "true" Option "Device" "/dev/psaux" Option "Protocol" "auto-dev" Option "HorizEdgeScroll" "0" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Driver "wacom" Identifier "stylus" Option "Device" "/dev/input/wacom" Option "Type" "stylus" Option "ForceDevice" "ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY EndSection Section "InputDevice" Driver "wacom" Identifier "eraser" Option "Device" "/dev/input/wacom" Option "Type" "eraser" Option "ForceDevice" "ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY EndSection Section "InputDevice" Driver "wacom" Identifier "cursor" Option "Device" "/dev/input/wacom" Option "Type" "cursor" Option "ForceDevice" "ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Generic Video Card" Driver "sis" BusID "PCI:1:0:0" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Generic Monitor" Option "DPMS" HorizSync 28-64 VertRefresh 43-60 EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Device "Standardgrafikkarte" Monitor "Standardbildschirm" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Modes "800x600" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection EndSection ## "1280x800" "1280x768" "1200x800" "1152x864" "1152x768" Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Default Layout" Screen "Default Screen" InputDevice "Generic Keyboard" InputDevice "Configured Mouse" # Uncomment if you have a wacom tablet # InputDevice "stylus" "SendCoreEvents" # InputDevice "cursor" "SendCoreEvents" # InputDevice "eraser" "SendCoreEvents" InputDevice "Synaptics Touchpad" EndSection |
Are you sure that it is using VESA? Your xorg.conf shows it should be using SIS. Try sludo lsmod | grep sis.
Anyway, here are a couple of things that may be relevant: Quote:

Hi Jay
thanks for the reply, I've changed the default resolutions like you suggested. It turns out the real problem is that the SiS video driver needs to be recompiled for 8.04 - there's a thread here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...t=M671&page=12, and luckily a couple of guys on that forum have done all the work - I D/Ld the drivers and it all works! I'm now running Hi-Res again. BTW reading that thread doesn't put SiS and their (lack of) Linux support in a very good light. T. |
