Ubuntu 7.04 Wireless Router Visible but No IP Address

Hello,

I've installed Ubuntu 7.04 from scratch on my Dell Latitude D400. The install went great but I've really struggled to get Wireless working. Out of the box my internal Wireless card did not work. I have a Broadcom chipset 4306. Digging around I found a great doc on the Ubuntu help site.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...eisty_No-Fluff
I went through the install procedure for ndiswrapper and that seem to work fine.
I can now click on the networking icon at the top of my screen and see my wireless router by name but it will not connect and get an IP address.

bhawk@D400:~$ iwlist eth1 scanning
eth1 Scan completed :

Anyone have an idea why I'm getting Permission denied?

Bob

Probably because you're not root. If you haven't enabled the root account on Ubuntu, then run "sudo dhclient eth1" and enter your password when prompted.

AWESOME!

I wondered about having to be ROOT... Well that worked! Ok, So I rebooted and logged in as normal but no wifi.. sudo dhclient pulled the IP address. So do I have to do that each time?

Thanks
Bob

You shouldn't have to do it each time. There will be a script somewhere that you have to edit, though I'm not familiar with Debian's init system (presumably Ubuntu uses the same). Have a look here and see if there's anything there that can help. I'll look at Debian later on (haven't got time now) and see if I can figure out how to help you.

Debian has a tool called "Network tools" in the "System Tools" menu, so I assume Ubuntu has something similar. I think if you wanted to edit a file instead, the relevant file is /etc/network/interfaces.
