Ubuntu 6.10 installation on HP Pavillion DV5118TX

Hi,

I could install but could not run Ubuntu on my laptop. Although the Live CD runs properly but after installation, Ubuntu does not boot into GUI stays on the command line and the package X11 is missing so I cannot use any of those commands like init or startx.

I want to know Is there anyone who has installed Ubuntu on laptop - HP Pavillion DV5118TX

Specs -
NVDIA Ge Force Go 7400
Intel pentium duo core T2300
SATA HDD 100GB (hts541010g9sa00)
I already have Windows XP (home) on it.

Help!

Thanks
AJ

I have never done it with a laptop-but since a file is missing, you may want to burn the iso again...

Hmmm....just thinking out loud but you may try the program called envy. The program is more of a script and I think it will resolve your dependencies for X11 as well. I could be wrong, but it may be the quickest way to get back up an running.

You may also head the previous advice and reload. If you're missing the basic packages for X, the question is what other packages are broken?

The thing is that Live CD works fine. It boots but shows this error in the start

PCI cannot allocate resurce region 7 of bridge 0000:001C.0
PCI cannot allocate resurce region 8 of bridge 0000:001C.0
PCI cannot allocate resurce region 6 of bridge 0000:001C.0
PCI cannot allocate resurce region 5 of bridge 0000:001C.0
PCI cannot allocate resurce region 4 of bridge 0000:001C.0
PCI cannot allocate resurce region 0 of bridge 0000:001C.0

And then it boots in GUI but the same installation on hard drive fails to boot into GUI.

Do you know something like this?

I have removed linux from my system. The error is -
PCI cannot allocate resurce region 7 of bridge 0000:001C.0
PCI cannot allocate resurce region 8 of bridge 0000:001C.0
PCI cannot allocate resurce region 6 of bridge 0000:001C.0
PCI cannot allocate resurce region 5 of bridge 0000:001C.0
PCI cannot allocate resurce region 4 of bridge 0000:001C.0
PCI cannot allocate resurce region 0 of bridge 0000:001C.0

After this the linuix boots fine and goe sin GUI and OS is runing fine but this is only with Live CD of the OS. I tried Gentoo and the story is same with it too.

Please help.

Thanks
AJ

Try adding this as a boot option:

pci=routeirq pci=assign-busses

You will add this to the kernel boot options in the menu.lst

Here's a sample from mine (/boot/grub/menu.lst)

Code:
title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.17-11-generic
root (hd0,1)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.17-11-generic root=/dev/hda3 ro quiet splash pci=routeirq pci=assign-busses
initrd /initrd.img-2.6.17-11-generic
quiet
savedefault
boot

Hope that helps.
