Ubuntu 6.06


First time running linux (Ubuntu 6.06)i tried running on my pc and laptop either one can not get on line. Where should i start.

Now, what wifi card are you using and do you know what chipset it uses? Not all wifi chips are supported "out of the box", due to the proprietary nature of the chipset maker. There are ways to get the unsupported wifi cards to work in Linux with just a little work.

If you are not usre how to find out the chipset in Linux, enter the following after the wifi card is in your machine:

sudo lspci -v
Look for the card, probably near the end of the list.

I'm stuck with dial up for the time being. Always read in here that if one insists on that, to get an external modem. Bought a Creative Labs external serial, works great on 6.06.

Yes open the terminal ( Applications->Accessories->Terminal ) and post us the output of sudo lspci and we can see what network card you have.
