Ubuntu 16.04 freeze on startup after minor Windows 10 update

Just installed most recent Windows 10 updates alongside Ubuntu 16.04 and when I switched back to Ubuntu 16.04, all it would do was display the Ubuntu logo and dots for a few seconds and then freeze. Tried all of the advanced options in grub2 (barring recovery) after which it went a bit longer before it froze. What should I do next?

My guess would be that the "minor update" re-enabled secure boot. Boot into your firmware and see.

Just did. Secure boot appears to be turned off in the BIOS.

The cause of this is often windows updating the partition table and not including any Linux entry. The link below gives a number of possible solutions. Some solutions work for MBR installs, others for UEFI so that would be the first thing you need to determine before doing anything.

You might boot your Ubuntu Live media and get the boot repair software from the link below but rather than trying to repair, select the option to Create Bootinfo Summary and post the link here.
