Ubuntu 13.10b1 keyboard mouse lost focus

Hi there,

Just installed the beta on an Atom set top box pc, no problem during installation, but first boot up to default desktop the keyboard and mouse failed to respond only the cursor active, but I can switch session via alt-f2. I managed to install Gnome Shell from terminal, thought it was Unity's problem caused the lock up, but how do I change default desktop via terminal ? I never like Unity.

Try when you do the ALT-TAB to just hit ALT-nothing and release and see if it brings up that obnoxious type-in/select bar to run an application (upper left near the window manager logo), and then hit ESC.

I'm still "characterizing". By which I mean that I have 13.04 and I've seen that same problem.

I'm also on an ATOM computer by the way.

I do stuff like editing files using keyboard and mouse and hitting ALT-TAB to swap between windows to allow me to manually move/rename my results.

If I screw up and hit the ALT key on my keyboard and hit nothing else, or if I mis-time my ALT-TAB and it doesn't see the TAB, I get behavior much like you're describing. My mouse clicks will no longer work properly. One bad keystroke has disabled me. On all applications, mouse control is varied, but mainly not working.

Yes, it's a pain in the backside.

I try to hit ALT-{nothing} and release and see what happens. Many times I do see the type-in/select bar with some slashes in it, representing the equivalent of "Huh?" on their part because it was half-accepting things invisibly, while I was trying to get my mouse to work for me. Hitting ESC at that point gets me working and I don't have to shut down and restart. I'm not sure if I have to both hit ESC and then ALT-TAB to swap back/forth to fully clear it. Obviously I typically hit ALT-TAB a lot because I was stuck and angry.

Probably not indicative solely of ATOM computers, but mine the keyboard is so small, it is easy to screw this up versus on a full sized keyboard.

I gave it up and installed Xubuntu instead, it was my backup machine I used to test things, I am glad that I am not alone on this ha ! May be I'll give KDE a try later, I used to hated it being too heavy and fancy, but the new release looks better to me.
