Ubuntu 12.10 stuck on "Preparing to Install" page.

Hi everyone,I have tried to install Ubuntu 12.10 onto my HDD, but it is stuck on the "Preparing to Install " page , with the icon spinning for over an hour, after clicking the continue button, without any actions/activity occurring. The install 3rd party software is ticked ? if this is relevant? I have one other linux distro installed on this HDD already, Linux Mint 10, I am using P4 2.6 GHZ machine with 1GB RAM. Any ideas what is happening with this installation? and how I can fix it. Cheers, and a Merry christmas and Happy New Year, to all

Hi there,

I am sure that Ubuntu is one of the most easiest OS to install. However, you problems is something that I haven't come across. I don't know but I think or I would suggest you if you could untick the install 3rd party software. I would urge you to check your internet connection before you install, check in when your in live mode.
I am pretty sure your processor and RAM must be more than enough for Ubuntu.

You may have done this but it is good to ask; did you check the md5sum on the ISO you downloaded?

Another thing you should do in this situation is hit the space bar, have your finger cocked and ready when you boot to the CD, when the first purple (I assume it is still purple) screen comes up that has the cryptic icons on the bottom, supposedly a keyboard and a man. This is the highly intuitive signal that this is where you get to the real menu for the disk.

You will find that you have an option to check the integraty of the disk. Do that.

Another option is to not go to live session but to install. If the md5sum is good, the disk is good there could be some problem with the live session itself. The install option will simply start the installer by it self and that may work better.

The current installer has a vast number of bugs against it most of which do not show up on most hardware. You may just be lucky enough to have such hardware.

A system with 1GB of memory is about the minimum for an Ubuntu install nowadays. So do as widget suggested. First run the CD integrity check. Assuming the CD passes the integrity check, reboot to the CD and go straight to the install without loading the live session.
It may be that having the live session running along with trying to install Ubuntu is maxing out your memory and slowing things down.

With a low end system you may want to try Lubuntu: http://lubuntu.net/ Lubuntu is Ubuntu with the light and fast LXDE desktop instead of that bloated resource hog Unity desktop that Ubuntu uses. Lubuntu would run much better on your hardware.

Always be sure turn Linux install CDs at the slowest possible speed to avoid errors on the CD.

If you plan to use that computer for a while you would get much better performance by adding more memory.
