Ubuntu 12.04 LTS updates and booting problem

I have had this happen to me several times now... when updates (usually kernel updates) get downloaded and installed on my dual boot (GRUB with Windows 7) machine I have all kinds of strange boot problems.

For example yesterdays updates were available (kernel), I downloaded and installed them and a restart was required. I restarted and it hangs and then cycles between restarting (GRUB menu) and hanging.

I reboot the system to the previous kernel release or recovery mode a few times and then it seem to clear up. No other action taken.

Any idea what is wrong or how to handle the better in the future?

If an update is installing a new kernel, I would make note of the new kernel. I would expect update-grub to be run at the end of the update. If you don't see it, check the grub.cfg file to see if the new kernel is there. If not run sudo os-prober and sudo update-grub consecutively and watch the output or check the grub.cfg file again for the new kernel and if it is there, reboot to test.

I don't really know why you have the problem you do, rebooting and older kernel and then it works unless some other mystery is happening. I don't use Ubuntu that often so I'm not sure if this will resolve your issue.

Thanks for a few suggestions. The next kernel update I will try to pay close attention and see if I can make more sense of it.
