This is the latest crash report and after a clean reinstall. I figured the earlier problems would be resolved by formatting the /home partition. And although it became more stable I am still getting critical errors such as this
from the update manager

Code:
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ie.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_restricted_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

The login dialog box is off-center by design. This is not a flaw. My system has somewhat similar specs to yours and I'm not experiencing any problems or slowdowns at all.

It looks very much like a driver issue but I don't know where to start trouble shooting this.
