Ubuntu 11.4 installed along side MS XP-PRo on Dell Laptop

When running ubuntu, the desktop often hangs.
ubuntu seems to be running with tt2 as the interface

When desktop hangs there is no keyboard and no mouse buttons. The cursor still moves

I've tried

ctl+alt+f1 or f2 and no effects and can't access the terminal window

Force Quit is on the panel but can't activate it.

Have rebooted in recover mode. It completed successfully but didn't seem to help.

Have to reboot to recover.
Have not yet been able to locate anything on this forum or on the internet in general, but will keep trying.

I don't know if your and my problems have the same cause, but here is what was causing mine. I was starting exe.deb packages for wine which would then start wine. For some reason the screen would resize and then hang. I would fiddle with it for a while and could only get the mouse to work (Just like you.) After I did this about ten times, somehow I finally managed to wait long enough for the "Configuring Wine" window to pop up. Apparently it was just taking a long time for that window to open. After wine was configured everything returned to normal.
