first please tell us which hardware you are trying to run it on.
then also, I'd be curious to know why you installed 10.04, it's more than a year old. 11.04 is available since April.
Maybe you want the 10.04LTS version, it's supported until 2013-04
Ubuntu 11.04 is supported until 2012-10 (which is close to April 2013).

Ubuntu 11.04 may well have audio working out of the box for your machine. Try a live cd to verify this.

To add to the suggestions form 16pide, since you've already taken the time to install 10.04 (a very old version) you might try running "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade". This should take you up to the latest version which, as 16pide mentioned, might resolve your sound issues.

In my experience with Linux I've found that ever version brings about better hardware support.

To tell us what audio device your computer uses open a terminal and post the output of:
Code:
lspci | grep -i audio
And to tell us what sound modules are loaded for audio on your Ubuntu 10.04, post the output of:
Code:
lsmod | grep -i snd
I also agree that Ubuntu 11.04 may offer better support for your audio, especially if you have a newer computer.

And welcome to the LQ forums!
