Trying to wireless connect to internet. Just installed Ubuntu 6.10v

I just installed Ubuntu 6.10 in my laptop from an image burning. It works fine but I am not able to connect to the internet. I have a linksys wireless G router and 2 other computers are connected (windows XP) with no problems. I don't know how to set it up to connect it.
I will appreciate your help
Thanks
Fernando

what have you done to try connect?

In the K menu under internet there is a program called wireless assistant manager or something like that (not at my comp right now)
That will find the available networks - make sure you router is broadcasting the SSID

if you connection is encrypted when you try connect it will as for the details.

Give that a try and let us know how it goes.

Also look in the k menu under um - programs or system apps not sure near the bottom of the menu. In there you will find network connection icon and can setup some things from there to such as enabling you NIC's etc

Depending on what wireless card is in your laptop, you will likely need to use ndiswrapper to make use of proprietary windows drivers to get the card working. Search the HCL for specific instructions on how to get your card working. Once you have done that, if you still need help, let me know.

Activate the Universal and Restricted repositories in Synaptic and get all the wireless stuff for your wireless chipset there...

Stock Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu doesn't ship with madwifi or any other proprietary code that runs afoul of the GPL... You have to tell Synaptic to go look in the "unofficial" repositories for that... For some other stuff too...

I have done it. The wireless assistance does not find my wireless connection. How do I make sure the router is broadcasting the SSID.. How do I know if my connection is encrypted?
Thanks

I've found Ubuntu pretty good with wifi.
Edgy (6.10) broke the Prism2 drivers - you can blacklist the drivers and see if that helps if you have that chipset. See here .

Edgy seems to have a problem with wireless, there are a few fixes floating around the net but none worked for me.
I can connect to an unencripted network coming from a linksys unit, at least the ssid says it's a linksys.
I'm using a netgear wg511 pcmcia card and a dlink 614+ router that have worked for years under linux without configuring anything but wep.
On another forum a guy said he could connect to a his belkin router but not his DLink DL-624 router. So if a patch fix doesnt come out maybe I'll try a new router, I've been thinking of upgrading to a WPA network anyway.
