Trying to select Echo Audio IndigoIO as default sound card in Hardy

I have been trying to follow the instructions posted here:

http://www.alsa-project.org/main/ind...odule-indigoio

...to install the Echo Audio IndigoIO PCMCIA card in my Sony Vaio laptop running Hardy.

I have been able to get the blue light on the soundcard to light up when I start Ubuntu (which usually means there is communication with the PC when I run Windows). I may be incorrect, but this leads me to believe the drivers are running

But looking in Alsamixer, there is no indication of the soundcard.

I can get the internal sound to work fine, but would like to use the 24 bit Echo Audio card for recording.

Although I can usually figure things out, the instructions on the Alsa site are cryptic to a newbie like me. I don't understand exactly what's going on in the instructions.

Isn't there an easier step by step, Newbie approved method to:

1) Check to make sure the drivers are properly installed?
2) Select the IndigoIO as the default card?

I have gotten through this part:

Setting up modprobe and kmod support

Before you send a mail complaining that "I don't have /etc/modules.conf, where do I find it ……" ‒ the /etc/conf.modules has been deprecated with a few distro's, but in your case it may still be /etc/conf.modules. Basically they are both the same, but recent version of modutils use /etc/modules.conf instead. Nothing to worry about as such, optionally please update to the latest version of modutils. This should solve your problem.

Here's the example for this card. Copy and paste this to the bottom of your /etc/modules.conf file.
Note:

Debian GNU/Linux users need to save this information into a file in the /etc/modutils/ directory (eg. /etc/modutils/alsa) and run update-modules.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! :newbie:
