Trouble installing binutils-2.19

Hello,
My first attempt with Linux is to set up the Lush programming language. I am having trouble installing binutils. I cannot seem to drag the uncompressed folder into /usr/bin due to permissions. I assumed using the terminal would be the answer. I tried cp /home/desktop/binutils-2.19 /usr/bin but it keeps saying the directories were ommitted. Any ideas?

Unless you removed the package, 'binutils' is already
installed on your Slackware. ( And don't change it.)

To know, what is installed : a list of all installed
packages can be made with the command
'ls /var/log/packages/ > my-packages.txt' .

If you really want to see, how 'binutils' is build,
have a look here
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/.../binutils.html

Thank you for the reply. I have tried Slackware a few times this past year or so but my old laptop would not work for more than a day or two. I am currently experimenting with Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop on a newer computer. I installed yesterday and everything is running great. I know that binutils is not installed for when I ran the Lush 'make install' I got an error message and then a prompt to install binutils. (The Lush Docs forewarn of this possibility)
Perhaps Slackware is more suited to learn Lush/Linux navigation??

Amongst the 26,000 ready to install packages for
Ubuntu 9.04 is of course binutils.

In order to have a consistent OS, it is a good idea
to install all available system packages with the
package manager, 'synaptic' or use the command

sudo apt-get install binutils
( The version is binutils-2.19.1 )

Ubuntu 9.04 will be fine as a developing system.
sudo apt-get install lush
will provide lush-1.2.1, lush-library-1.2.1 .

Also see recommended packages related to lush :

Thanks. I got Lush to open and run some commands after using Synaptic. I will use it again to install EMacs.
