touchpad stops responding- lucid lynx

install 10.04 a few weeks, most things have worked fine. have installed updates as they have come out, but recently i lost functionality of my touchpad once i login. at the login screen the mouse will move around the screen and i can click on my username, once logged in, mouse cursor on screen no longer moves.

tried going to recovery mode, ran the find and fix broken packages, still not fixed.

laptop-hp dv5z-1000, dual boot ubuntu 10.04/win7 via grub, amd, ati.

any questions, suggestions and ideas are welcome.
thanks! ~david

yes, i'm aware of the switch to turn it on and off. i have pressed the switch and tried using it after logging in, but still does not work.

how do i check to make sure it's not disabled at the software or kernel level? i don't understand why it would work at the login screen, but not once logged in.

thanks ~david

ok, i found this interesting, if i start up another xserver,
sudo startx -- :1
then i am logged into the xserver as root and i have functionality of my touchpad, switch back to my normal login(f7), it still doesn't work.
