system update/package management

can anyone give me a breakdown on the above? I currently use opensuse - im not a great fan of yast and its annoying repos. I am thinking of going with fedora - yum I have heard is much better.

Whats ubuntu like for keeping your system up to date, and installing additional software - dependency problems common??

btw - would you recommend for a laptop?

cheers
Jurgen

I'd recommend Fedora (CentOS) and yum.

The ubuntu/debian fans will tell you that package management on Fedora/RedHat/CentOS is no good but that is usually based on:
a) The fact that rpm dependencies USED to be a major problem.
b) Unfamiliarity with yum

They'll tell you apt utilities are superior. IMO they aren't very intuitive to use. That's an opinion of course. When they post in this thread they will be posting opinions too but they'll try to pretend they are "facts".

I've not used YaST so can't compare anything to it.
