Sudden sound loss

Running Kubuntu Dapper. It's weird. Maybe it happened after an update, it's worked fine for the past year or so. I have a Realtek ALC850 rev 0 onboard sound chip according to alsamixer. In alsamixer the volumes are all up plenty but they all say they are '[Off]' in the Item field, except for Master which i presume is the only one currently on. PCM might need to be on, how do i do this? I've checked in my user profile and 'audio' hasn't been removed from my list.

Ok tried running Alsamixer by clicking on the icon in the tray instead of going old school through a terminal and turning PCM back on made sound come back And yes i do feel daft before you ask.
