Stupid question about internet connection sharing

I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to make Ubuntu share its internet connection with another computer on the LAN.

I have a cable connection going into the first NIC on the Ubuntu computer. It has a second NIC (a Tulip class card) that's connected to a second computer. The second computer needs to share the internet connection with the first.

I can't figure it out. It's so easy to do in Windows, and on Mandy 10.X there's a simple applet you check to make it work. I can't figure out how to do it on Ubuntu.

Anyone feel like helping me figure out how to do this?

Hi.

Basically there is no point and click method of doing this on Ubuntu that I know of. What your effectively trying to do is masquerading so you'll find a lot of documentation if you search using that name. This can be really simple or really complicated depending on how technical you are. This document explains masquerading really well: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/IP-Masquerade-HOWTO/

Also take a look at this post: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-25813.html

I'm not sure how you're assigning your second PC an IP address, but you might want to start by getting DNSMasq package working.

There is a lot of stuff involved but I hope this provide a good start.
Enjoy

On my Ubuntu laptop, I used Firestarter (its in the repositories) to share my internet connection with others. It's basically a firewall but when you configure it you can enable internet connection sharing in one of the menus. Might not be the best sollution but it was very easy to do so if you can't figure masquerading out you might want to give it a try.
