Stuck In Real Player 10 Hell, Kubuntu Feisty Fawn

When I bring up the pop-up window, the embedded player appears for a few seconds, then the controls grey out.

I'm using Real Player 10 Gold, as downloaded from real.com, in Firefox 2.0.0.3. I'm trying to watch video on the BBC site. I've got Real Player installed in/usr/local/bin/RealPlayer,and a which reaplay shows it as /usr/bin/realplay. I've copied the nphelix* files into the directories specified in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RealplayerInstallationMethods,
the about:config bit is set to true, but I don't have the symlink set. My $PATH is

/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games

so I'm thinking it shouldn't need it. I'm not using MPlayer, which wasn't really working for me on that site, anyway.

I've set the relevant mimetypes in KControl to choose Real Player first.

One curious thing: when I bring up Edit-->Preferences-->Manage, no Real Player data show up, even though about: plugins says

Quote:
Helix DNA Plugin: RealPlayer G2 Plug-In Compatible

File name: /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/nphelix.so
Helix DNA Plugin: RealPlayer G2 Plug-In Compatible version 0.4.0.622 built with gcc 3.2.0 on Jul 18 2006

MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled
audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin RealPlayer Plugin Metafile rpm Yes
I'm at a loss. Can anyone lend a hand?

Thanks!

Have you attempted to open and play a video by just opening the player. I typically like to test the player independently before working on prog call bugs within FFox.
I had a similar issue and I ended up re-installing the driver link files from FFox/plugins to the actual drivers under helix and realplay. Also if you have more than one version of the player; make sure the link files are directed to the later revision driver.
I mostly use mplayer now for everything, it seems to play everything with much less hassle...

I got the standalone player working, after some more fiddling around, but still, the embedded one zeroes out. I'm just using this one version of the player.

I had some similar problems with Real Player initially. But, I then installed Automatix and then used Automatix to install Real Player again, this time in the right place!

All worked well
