Starting at "runlevel 3" / console login - is this a sound method ?

Hi there,
I've been messing about with Fluxbuntu 7.10 and as is the case with recent distros of Ubuntu ( correct me if I'm wrong) there is no inittab file.
I do not want to start with the default login manager which is called slim but want a regular no nonsense console login - the standard login if I started in runlevel 3 in other distros. I was told to use software called Upstart but found a more convenient method. I went into each of the rc*.d directories for runlevels 2 to 5 and renamed the slim login manager script from S99Slim to K87Slim. When I reboot / restart I get dropped straight into the console login prompt from where I can login to my account. Is this a reasonable way of getting round my dilemma ? Or can one suggest a better and more correct method ? It used to be a lot more straightforward when only the inittab file needed editing. Thanks for any help !

regards,
uncle-c

I believe that although there's no /etc/inittab in the more recent 'buntus, if you create one, it'll be honoured.
Worth a try?

Thanks tredegar I'll give it a go. I now have to root around and find the fluxbuntu initialisation file !

Edit : Is the initialisation file called /etc/init.d/rcS ?

Cheers,
Uncle-c
