Stall on boot prior to login

Hi I have just moved house and tried to boot up my machine (AMD XP 2000+, Ubuntu 6.0.6.1 LTS) and it keeps stalling after all the checks and before the login screen. (the checks are all ok except for PCMCIA services of which there are none).
If I press the power button on the case it shuts down and splashs up a command line login prompt before going through the shutdown screen, but as it is shutting down I can't do anything.
At the stall point I get a cursor in the top left of the screen (as usual before login screen) but then just a blank screen. I think the screen is actually in standby mode but nothing other than shutdown brings it out of it.
Any ideas would very great as I really won't to avoid a re-install if possible.
Thanks guys

Try hitting f2 (I think) to get the verbose messages.

Got Verbose - All OK until login

I got to the verbose boot sequence by hitting esc at grub startup and editing boot parametres (replaced
Code:
quiet splash
with
Code:
verbose
)
This gave me the full ouput. This was all ok started to load login screen and stalled as before.
Any ideas would be great, thanks guys
