This is the second time I've installed Ubuntu on this hardware and the first time I got the sound working. Now, however, I'm having much more difficulty.
The sound card is detected (VT8235 AC97) as I can see via lspci. The snd_via82xx module is loaded and I can hear the drum beat both at startup before I log in and as I log out.
Once I log in to Gnome then sound no longer works.
"The volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.
You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the menu."
This is the message I get when I try to access volume control.
Alsamixer detects the card as Realtek AC655 rev 0 and I've tried unmuting different settings to no avail.
I've read that alsaconf might help but it's not installed despite having alsa-utils installed.
I'd appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks.
EDIT: Getting frustrated I tossed in a SB Live! card I had laying around, disabled onboard sound in the BIOS, and I still have the same problem.

Install AlsaMixerGui and check the settings there. I think there's a few issues with soundcards under Ubuntu, like muted sound... That's how I solved it... I couldn't find these muting settings anywhere else... Try it out

Mate - i have had this very same problem over the past couple of days... Exact same error message...
I have resolved today by 'uninstalling' gstreamer0.8-esd in Synaptic.
I then 'removed' the volume control from the Gnome panel and added it back in and it started working straight away - no reboot even required.. It looks as if Alsa and ESD dont co-exist very well... at least not on my machine.
i have installed ubuntu 5.1 breezer but my totem player not working it opens but give error message mpeg vedio file is detected but content is text file

Actually, I just did a fresh install of Dapper Drake today and that took care of the problem!
Yeah i installed dapper yesterday and it has been fantastic as well - had problems with 855gm video but all resolved now with the 955resolution patch..
