Sound Card troubles Ubuntu 5.10 AC 97

Ello all

I finally managed to get Ubuntu to work
Everything so far runs smooth
EXCEPT my sound card

My sound card is a AC 97
I believe the manufacturer is RealTek

I'm fairly new to linux so if there is anyone that can give me th explanation on how to get this to work in laymans terms that would be appreciated

Totem says it can't stream
xmms plays it fine but no sound
Any help would be appreciated

Many thanks in advance,

Mick

you get no sound at all?

if you go to system settings >> sound and mutimedia >> hardware tab, use "auto detect" apply settings, then under general tab use test sound (at the bottom) test midi wont work unless u have a midi device attached,,which it seems u dont.

is there any other error messages??

Make sure "master" and "pcm" are turned up.

If nothing happens when you type alsamixer, type "sudo apt-get install alsa-base" (without the quotes, of course) and then try again.

Sheesh - it looks as if it should work. Are you sure you got earphones or something plugged into the correct jack? Sure the hardware is OK and not busted maybe?

Came to find that 1 wire inside the box was a little lose
This happened when i took gfx card out which will be my next issue
My gfx card prevents Ubuntu from booting up as it makes ubuntu freeze on the hotplug subsystem
