Sound

hi all

My sound doesn't seem to work, I get sound when Ubuntu loads and exits, but I don't get sound when I try to play video or mp3's, I cant seem to find the error, can any one point me the right way please.

When I do try to play mp3 with Banshee 0.13.2 I get the little red icon with the white stoke mark. In fact all my music programs are the same.

Any idea to what it is, I have a duel boot system, sound works on XP ok.

Ubuntu 8.04.1

MP3 support is not shipped by default.

Install libmad, vlc, xmms...etc

(search mp3 in synaptic)

That's not the answer I was looking for, I would like to know why its not playing any sound, at one stage I use to hover over a music or sound file and it would play, now they dont, how do I get sound back again, do I need to install or run a command to check the sound out ?

your post isn't all that clear to me, what you mean by install Install libmad, vlc, xmms...etc what will it do ?

You can always fix your default players from the KDE or Gnome settings. mp3s will NOT play unless you install relevant libs/players.

what doi you mean by that, un installing sound appz and reinstalling them ?

I have found this page which I'm working though, I dont know if its going to be any help unless I fluke it ( get the sound going ) funning is sound plays when I log back into the system after reboot.

If you get sound from the system, then those things (sound card etc) are all done. Your problem is with particular formats (and legal issues surrounding those).

In KDE you have "control center" or 'system settings'
