sound

In Gnome, when I turn the sound off (or just adjust volume for that matter) it makes no difference at all. I can turn the sound off, and it'll be just the same volume as it is on max. Why is this?

I'm using Ubuntu Hoary 5.04 on a dell Inspiron 9100. any help would be great.

I think the sound driver used by gnome and the application are different. Try to make both use the same driver.
You can change the sound driver used by gnome in the preferences/settings.

No, the same sound driver is used. Check out your sound server settings. You may want to try running alsaconf and make sure alsa is set up properly for your sound card.

I eventually figured it out. I had to change what the volume control effected. It defauls to changing "volume" but I changed it to another option (don't remember what it was, I'm in windows right now) and it fixed it. Don't understand why "volume" won't do it, but whatever.
