sometimes i m able to play music and never the videos

when i start my ubuntu it sometimes shows sounds and othertimes don't

also , i m not able to play videos

i installed M-player
but there was problem with the sounds
plz somebody give me a step by step procedure for this
i don't even know how to download,form where to download and how to install
i don't understand the readmes
i m running ubuntu 7.04

What type of hardware/equipment are you using?
what are you trying to play/stream/burn avi, mpeg 1234, real, wmv, ogg?
what programs/apps are you attempting to use?

Have you installed the 3rd party and backport repos, such that you have all needed codecs available? have you installed them as well?
do you even have the foggiest idea what i'm asking?
